My name is Maria Karol, I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. I am an interdisciplinary artist. But work mainly with installations, performances and graphics.

My practice explores the boundaries between mind and body and between the body and the collective.
One of the mediums that I use is the game engine. This medium allows to explore the space of consciousness. Plunging into the screen, the boundaries of the viewer shift, centering on the character for whom he plays in a computer game. These boundaries are becoming more visible. 


 

I explore boundaries through dance and communication also. When I approaching a person, he shifts, setting his own rules.

 

Also, I explore personal boundaries with a hand poke – oldest tattoing method. This is the practice of reclaiming body, marking the boundaries on the skin, when a bodies are becoming more and more transparent in modern reality.

 

Sculpture and graphics are reflections of my movement and ways to look at the body as a being without culture, which has become a tool, not a place.

 

I study the topic of boundaries both empirically and exploratoryly through linguistics, anthropology, folklore, feminist theory and philosophy. My judgments were especially influenced by: Jean-Luc Nancy, Roland Bart, Vladimir Propp.
